The institute launched the 6th “Southern Guangdong Cup” Design Competition in April, 2018. With the theme of “Update of Creativity”, Luntou Village in Haizhu District was chosen as the planning and design competition area in this competition. A total of 9 entries were received from the departments including Planning Institute 1, Planning Institute 2, Planning Institute 3, Planning Institute 4, Planning Institute 5, Planning Institute 6, Institute of Architecture, Housing Policy Research Center, Big Data Center, etc.

In order to continue to create a favorable learning atmosphere, strengthen the expertise and technical reserve, and improve the practical innovation, team coordination and speech reporting capabilities of technical personnel, as well as promote the construction of the “research type” planning institute, the institute launched the 6th “Southern Guangdong Cup” Design Competition in April, 2018. With the theme of “Update of Creativity”, Luntou Village in Haizhu District was chosen as the planning and design competition area in this competition. A total of 9 entries were received from the departments including Planning Institute 1, Planning Institute 2, Planning Institute 3, Planning Institute 4, Planning Institute 5, Planning Institute 6, Institute of Architecture, Housing Policy Research Center, Big Data Center, etc. 

On June 20th, the Chief Engineer’s Office organized the activity of first round selection and the selection was chaired by Li Jianping, Deputy Chief Planner. The institute leadership including Dean Qiu Yanqing, Secretary Qian Zhongqiang, and Vice President Wang Hao attended the selection. Li Guohua, deputy secretary of Luntou Village Committee, was invited to attend the evaluation.

Vice President Li Jianping first introduced the organization process and the selection agenda of the competition, including the design theme and the determining process of the design area, the organization of the preliminary research in Luntou Village, and the schedule of this competition, etc. Afterwards, nine teams conducted the program report successively in the draw sequence. According to the selection rules, and based on the voting by the members of the Technical Committee of the Institute and Li Guohua, deputy secretary of the Luntou Village Committee, five teams were selected to enter the second round of design competition.

After the report and selection of the whole day, the Technical Committee of the Institute highly commended the achievements made in the course of this design competition. They were of the view that the team competition was featured by the solid investigation foundation and strong sense of innovation. The design schemes of the nine teams had their own characteristics respectively. At the same time, some of the judges commented on the design scheme and the organization of this stage, and put forward the specific suggestions for the program of next stage.

Dean Qiu Yanqing put forward that “The “Southern Guangdong Cup” Design Competition offered a stage for young planners to showcase their talents, and it was also an opportunity for accelerating growth. All production departments shall attach great importance to it. The design scheme shall focus on five aspects, namely “economically viable, technically feasible, socially feasible, policy feasible and ecological feasible”, which shall be more universally accepted. The participating teams shall be noted to the accumulation and summary of technologies, and ‘record’ the results.”

Secretary Qian Zhongqiang said, “The preliminary organization work of the competition was solid and complete, and it was very creative to invite Li Guohua, deputy secretary of Luntou Village Committee where the program design place is located. He suggested that the finalists find unique characteristics for their own programs respectively. In addition, they shall continue to deepen and make breakthroughs by centering on the theme. Those teams that were not selected shall never be discouraged, and shall keep making efforts in the future."

Xu Hong, Deputy Chief Planner of Shenzhen Branch believed that the participating teams should determine different reporting strategies based on the order of drawing, on-site conditions, and audience groups. For example, the first team came to the stage should first introduce the project overview so that the judges can understand the background, instead of immediately entering into the design theme. In addition, the subsequent participating teams can introduce less about the status quo, while focusing more on the concept and creativity of the programs; the era of explaining the concept in the design competition has gone away, and it shall focus more on the feasibility and urban operation thinking; if the second round of selection is to be conducted in Luntou Village, it is necessary to think about how to report to the villagers as it needs to be expressed in the more universally accepted “concise and simple language”.

Moreover, the jury members such as Li Guohua, Liu Hongtao, Wei Jiandan, and Liu Pei suggested that the program of the next stage shall strengthen the research and design of issues for discussion such as the activation of water systems and waterfront space, transportation smoothness, historical and cultural heritage, and social inclusion and so on.

Finally, Dean Qiu proposed that the second round of the competition selection shall be moved to the square outside the ancestral temples of Luntou Village and the villagers and representative developers who participated in the urban renewal of Lun Tau Village shall be invited to the selection as observers. This proposal was warmly responded by Li Guohua, secretary of the Luntou Village Committee.

According to the plan, five teams entering the second round will continue their deepened design schemes in the coming few months. The second round of selection will be held in October and by them, the top three winning teams will be decided by then.
