On June 22, the institute invited Zhu Hairen, Dean of the Guangzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, to give a special lecture titled “Overview of Conservation of Cultural Relics in Guangzhou - Focusing on the Historic Urban Area” in the Academic Hall of 3F. The lecture was chaired by Deputy Chief Planner Li Jianping, and attended by the institute leadership such as Dean Qiu Yanqing and Secretary Qian Zhongqiang, etc. In addition, a total of 100 plus technicians of the institute attended the lecture.

Dean Zhu Hairen was delivering a special lecture

Mr. Zhu first introduced the history and development course of the Guangzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, and stated that as early as the 1950s, Guangzhou had already started the archaeological work. Moreover, the government paid more and more attention to the conservation of historical relics as time passing by. The scale of the technical force also continued to expand. Later, Mr. Zhu introduced the relevant knowledge such as the concept and classification of cultural relics, as well as the legal system of cultural relics, etc., so that everyone could have certain understanding regarding the preservation of cultural relics.

Then, Mr. Zhu emphasized the development and change of Guangzhou city, and the overall situation of cultural relics in Guangzhou as well as the preservation of cultural relic resources in historical districts. According to archaeological findings and speculation, the human activity in Guangzhou area enjoys a history of at least 4000-5000 years, and the early human activities mainly concentrated in the Liuxi River and the Zengjiang River. Therefore, the real mother river in Guangzhou should be Liuxihe River and Zengjiang River. However, seen from the history of city construction, Guangzhou is a historical and cultural city with more than 2,200 years of history, and the rich historical sites and precious cultural heritage resources have become the city card and representative of spiritual culture of this city -- Guangzhou. For thousands of years, Guangzhou has been one of the few cities in China with little change in its central location. As a result, its historical context has been well preserved and the underground cultural relics are abundant. Yue Xiu District and Liwan District have become the most concentrated area of cultural heritage sites in Guangzhou.

Last but not least, Me. Zhu introduced the efforts made by the Guangzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology for the preservation of cultural relics, including improving the legal system, conducting archaeological survey, promoting the preservation of cultural relics, facilitating the information construction of cultural relics, as well as the problems existed in the work and the direction of improvement, which include the value of cultural relic resources remaining to be discovered, poor accessibility to cultural relics, difficulty in the activated utilization of cultural relics, etc.

In the Lecture

After the lecture, the technical personnel of the institute have exchanged and discussed with Dean Zhu Hairen regarding the specific issues and cases such as the activation and utilization of historical buildings, the transformation of the Giant Buddhist Temple at Xihu Road, and the transformation of the Historic District of Enning Road and so on.

Last but not least, Dean Qiu Yanqing of the institute expressed his gratitude to Dean Zhu Hairen for his exchanges in the institute. Mr. Qiu said, “This morning, we studied the development and utilization issues of the ancient post roads of Southern Guangdong in Jinan University, and in the afternoon, we listened to the lecture given by Mr. Zhu, which seemingly have made us traversed a history of more than 2,000 years and have also made us gained the knowledge of Guangzhou's history. The preservation of cultural relics is closely related to the planning industry. By figuring out which cultural relics can be activated and utilized, and where the appropriate construction can be conducted are very helpful to our business. It is believed that in the future, we two organizations will have more exchanges and cooperation. In addition, it is hoped that we can receive the technical support from Guangzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology regarding the topics such as the current and future inventory planning and the transformation of the old town, old factory buildings and old villages in Guangzhou.
