A successful conclusion of a joint graduation design competition of six schools in 2018 “Southern Guangdong Cup”

On June 1, the sixth “Southern Guangdong Cup” six-school joint graduation design competition hosted by the institute and organized by Guangzhou University came to a successful conclusion at the School of Architecture and Design of Southwest Jiaotong University.

On June 1, the sixth “Southern Guangdong Cup” six-school joint graduation design competition hosted by the institute and organized by Guangzhou University came to a successful conclusion at the School of Architecture and Design of Southwest Jiaotong University. In addition to the teachers and students from six schools participating in the competition, Cheng Qiming, the Vice President of School of Architecture of the Central Academy of Fine Arts was invited to participate in the defense. Dean Qiu Yanqing of the institute attended the competition as a specially invited defense judge. The Urban Development Research Center participated in the competition of the whole process as the liaison department.

 


At the Competition

The title of joint graduation design competition this year was “Conservation and Renewal Planning for Historic Districs of Meizhou City” with the theme of “Guests?Hometown?Relationship”. There were a total of 49 students from 6 schools in 9 team participated in the competition. They were from Guangzhou University, Southwest Jiaotong University, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Nanchang University, Xiamen University, and Harbin Institute of Technology (ranked according to the time sequence of the school joining the competition). The competition started from March 9 this year, and after 3 months of intense preparation, its footprint has crossed 4 cities including Guangzhou, Meizhou, Kunming and Chengdu. Finally, it ushered in the competition final defense on the very day of the Children's Day. After the results reporting in one day, 9 teams fully demonstrated their team's design achievements and creativity over 3 months to the defending judges by giving play the professional expertise of their colleges and universities respectively. In the end, the competition team of Xiamen University won the first prize with the brilliant scheme of themed “Pick up parted root from city ? return to the hometown”. The competition team of Nanchang University won the best creative award for the design scheme of “Track guests origin?build a famous hometown”.

After the competition, Professor Qiu Yanqing made a concluding speech on behalf of our institute. Mr. Qiu said that encouraging technological innovation and focusing on talent cultivation has always been the principle of the institute. Thanks to the “practical implementation of real issue” in this school-enterprise joint graduation design competition, students were enabled to make better and useful planning, and can be familiar with each link in the planning and design. At the same time, it also conveyed the standards and concepts of planning formulation in the institute. Last but not least, Mr. Qiu held out the olive branch to everyone and hoped that the students would have the opportunity to have internship and work in the institute, and give play their talents on a larger platform.

[Highlights] In order to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the "Southern Guangdong Cup" joint graduation design competition, it was proposed in the final defense activity to set June 1 of each year as the birthday of the "Southern Guangdong Cup" joint graduation design competition. Since it was organized in 2012, the “Southern Guangdong Cup” joint design competition has been vigorously supported by various colleges and universities. With the joining of a variety of colleges and universities, the activity scale has been continuously expanded in the past six years. The “6+1” organization form organized by 6 universities and Guangdong Urban & Rural Planning and Design Institute has further enriched the cooperation methods between planning and design institutions and universities. In addition, it has promoted the cultivation of professional talents in colleges and universities while enriching the project practice of the planning institution.
