On April 22, the preparatory work meeting for the New Technology Application Branch of the Guangdong Urban Planning Association was held at the Guangdong Building. The conference was chaired by Wang Hao, the Secretary General of the Guangdong Urban Planning Association and Deputy Director of the Guangdong Urban & Rural Planning and Design Institute. 17 leaders and guests including Hu Hai, Secretary General of the Urban Planning New Technology Application Committee of Urban Planning Society of China, and Xia Lanting, Deputy Director of the Construction Information Center of Guangdong Province attended the meeting.

The new information technology has provided various technical tools for modern urban planning and urban management, and also created unlimited possibilities for the construction and innovation of urban informatization. In order to closely follow the development strategy of accelerating the construction of an innovative country in the new era and promote the innovation and development of planning industry in Guangdong Province, and according to the requirements of the “four aspects in the national forefront”, the New Technology Application Branch was established upon the consent from the voting in the second board of directors of the sixth council of Guangdong City Planning Association (hereinafter referred to as “the Provincial Planning Association”). At the Meeting

The meeting mainly introduced the work plan of the New Technology Application Branch and conducted an in-depth exchange on the current organization structure of the branch.

Secretary General Wang Hao stressed that the importance of new technology applications in urban and rural planning is becoming increasingly prominent. It is an inevitable development trend to strengthen the application and promotion of new technologies in the future planning field. The establishment of the New Technology Application Branch aims to build a broader and more active communication platform for the planning industry in Guangdong, so as to promote its innovation and development.

Ma Xing, head of the Big Data Center of the Guangdong Urban & Rural Planning and Design Institute made the detailed introduction of the work plan for branch in 2018. She said that after the establishment of the New Technology Applications Branch, the scope of work mainly included the research and formulation of various planning and informatization standards of Guangdong Province, the launch of research projects related to the planning of new technologies, the organization and convening of the annual meeting forum of the branch and the special meeting of planning and informatization of the province, as well as the organization and planning of professional and technical training of new technologies, etc. Thanks to a series of multi-specialty, multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary exchanges and cooperation, the joint point of technological innovation and planning applications can be found to achieve the effect of promoting the reform of the planning system in Guangdong Province.

Three opinions were mainly put forward based on the current organizational structure and work scope of the branch, and after the full discussion by participants:

Firstly, the New Technology Application Branch should create the mechanism that starts from three aspects, namely multi-element, trans-boundary, and integration, so that the companies, universities, information centers and preparation centers can be integrated for collaboration. The concept of "new technology" is very extensive. It is necessary to have a clear definition or guidance for the new technologies involved in the branch, and the Guangdong characteristics and advantages shall be combined to determine the focus point.

Secondly, the academic advisers and academic committees of the branch are not limited to traditional planning industries, and they can also make trans-boundary attempts. Examples are the invitation of experts from natural resources for residence and join the team of professors in top five colleges and universities in Guangdong Province, and even the high-level global experts can be introduced from the new technology industry.
